Leading global automobile manufacturer creates high-quality technology asset inventory for intelligent self-service processes

The customer

One of the largest and most successful car brands, with production centers in nine different countries and sales centers all over the world.

The challenge

Ensuring that employees have the software they need to do their jobs can be a genuine challenge. As an organization grows larger and more complex, so too does the need for more specific and individual software solutions. Yet maintaining infrastructure security and effectively managing a software portfolio requires centralized approval processes. Solutions need to be checked for vulnerabilities and compared against the existing portfolio to eliminate redundancies and rein in costs. These processes can be long, involve a variety of different stakeholders, and in the end, they can make organizations less flexible, less agile, and less efficient.

The global automaker wanted to improve efficiency and increase flexibility. They decided to establish self-service workflows for software approvals, reducing the number of requests and the amount of paperwork, and automating more of their processes. This would make software available immediately and allow the organization to respond quickly to changing business needs.

The solution

To create these self-service software approval workflows, the automaker first needed high quality software inventory data. This was achieved by integrating Raynet’s market-leading Technology Catalog, the Unified Data Platform for Data Enrichment. The automaker additionally leveraged the catalog to improve the quality of its own catalog data, taking advantage of the Unified Data Platform’s normalization and enrichment capabilities as well as its continuously updated inventory data.

To further improve user experience and increase efficiency, Raynet created a Google-like search function whose results would be displayed in the automaker’s ServiceNow interface. The intelligent search function was to work like a web browser, correcting spelling mistakes, using predictive text to complete entries, and filtering the results according to availability and license costs, from free to lowest cost and upwards.

With Raynet’s Technology Catalog, this market-leading car manufacturer was able to quickly get normalized, updated, and enriched data. In combination with Raynet’s Catalog, the automaker had a data repository with all the information necessary for quick approval processes, including:

  • Vendor Information
  • Software Title
  • Software Version
  • Last Available Software Version
  • Software Edition
  • Software Functionality
  • Software Category
  • Software Release-, End of life-, End of support-dates
  • License Type
  • Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs)

Customer Benefits

The automaker now had the foundation for its intelligent search and self-service processes. The updated technology asset catalog provided the company with a complete overview of all the software in its inventory, and through the Raynet Technology Catalog, supplemented it with the information they required to create highly-automated, fast and easy software approval processes. Not only was the company able to significantly improve IT visibility, but it also made a momentous leap forward in agility, independence, and process efficiency.
