15x return on investment: Türk Telekom achieves clear IT visibility into the future.
When a project continues to deliver value even years after it was completed, then you know it was worth it. Türk Telekom, Türkiye’s first integrated telecommunications operator, can count their award-winning Software Asset Management (SAM) project from 2020 as an unqualified success.

With the successful implementation of Unified Data Management solutions from Raynet and Software Asset Management solutions from USU, Türk Telekom made a smooth switch from manual Excel lists to automated compliance reports.

When they began their SAM program three years ago as part of the merger of three different organizations, they had hoped to get an overview of their diverse and decentralized IT environment. Not only were they able to inventory over 1,600 software licenses on more than 20,000 clients and 12,000 servers, but they also managed to save three times the cost of the project in just one year.

Three years later, the investment has delivered a return on investment 15 times the initial project cost. It’s a clear win for Türk Telekom and a demonstration of the continued value of IT visibility.

"After surveying the market and looking at different vendors, we found that RayVentory was the most valuable solution to automate our IT asset inventory management processes."

The Challenge
During the merger of three different companies (fixed network, mobile communications, and broadband), gaining complete transparency over its diverse and heterogeneously distributed software assets was essential for Türk Telekom. With this transparency, the telecommunications provider would be able to maximize its software investment and limit IT waste, saving them money and giving them new licensing flexibilities.

A few unused licenses or shelfware in one company may not amount to much waste or lost potential, but add license waste together from three different organizations, and you’re suddenly facing a significant financial impact. Türk Telekom wanted to avoid this by making sure that it had a complete overview of its licensing environment across its diverse and decentralized IT infrastructure.

Those responsible at Türk Telekom selected the comprehensive solutions Raynet Unified Data Platform and USU License Management as well as the know-how of MoS Academy and these Unified Data Management and Software Asset Management specialists.

The Solution and Customer Benefits
IT visibility would allow the newly formed group to standardize their software portfolio, better prepare for audits and to get the most value from their software investment. In the long term, it would also allow them to make strategic purchasing and deployment decisions for their customer-centric business and respond better to rapidly changing customer and market demands.

Türk Telekom chose Raynet’s Unified Data Platform to collect hardware, software, and cloud data. The solution’s flexible and automated inventory methods – organizations can choose and combine agent-based and agentless methods, for instance – allowed the communications giant to ensure accurate, high-quality data across its complex infrastructure, and to get the data quickly.

With the Unified Data Platform powered by RayVentory in hand, Türk Telekom was able to inventory more than 20,000 clients and around 12,000 servers. They were also able to get data from over 1,600 software licenses and almost 140 different vendors – a glance into the complexity of their environment.

"By using our innovative solution, Türk Telekom has been able to fully automate the process of collecting the database inventory, which without would normally take 30 manual days. The report is now generated with a single click."

The first concrete result of the project was the completion of the inventory data by a factor of 2.5.

Subsequently, the software portfolios of other providers were successively optimized. After meeting these initial goals, Türk Telekom expanded the SAM program to include additional major providers, such as SAP, Microsoft, Micro Focus, IBM, and Oracle, which they were able to execute quickly. The complex license data had been managed with Excel spreadsheets, but the Unified Data Platform introduced automatic, tool-supported processes, making manual Excel data entry a thing of the past.

Not only the did the renewed IT visibility allow them to make better, more strategic licensing decisions, but they were also able to refine and streamline their processes. They have reduced the time spent preparing for software audits from 100 working days to 6 – a 92% reduction – or to put it another way, they’ve won 92 days they can spend working on other, more strategic business priorities. Fully automating data gathering has also saved the organization at least 30 days of manual effort.

The Conclusion
Türk Telekom’s success is a reminder of what’s possible with complete IT visibility both in the short and long terms. Automating and streamlining IT data management processes create new opportunities for value across the business. Reducing effort frees up capacity for other projects and priorities, saves time and produces savings by optimizing the software portfolio.

For this outstanding SAM project, Türk Telekom received the international SAMS Europe Award in Fall 2020 and the ITAM Review Excellence Award in the category “ITAM Professional of the Year” in 2022.

“The overall solution offered by Raynet and USU was the most valuable one, because it met the high technical requirements and the team impressed us with its detailed expertise in the area of Unified Data Management,” says Alaattin Çetin, Technology Governance Group Manager at Türk Telekom. “We are convinced that Raynet and USU will enable us to stay consistent with our vision that, as being a driving force in the digital transformation of Türkiye, Türk Telekom’s IT Landscape should be managed based on accurate and robust IT asset data to be flexible and embrace the future.”
