From black box to white box:
99% IT Visibility across the group-wide Linux systems

Elimination of business-critical data gaps in SaaS applications through OOTB connectors

Optimization of licensing costs
thanks to relevant usage and installation data

A leading global sportswear manufacturer set itself the goal of optimizing its Software Asset Management (SAM) program and ensuring complete transparency across its entire IT infrastructure. The first step was to close IT Transparency gaps in virtual Linux servers and SaaS applications and collect all relevant IT asset data. For this task, the customer chose Raynet’s Unified Data Platform with its excellent Discovery & Inventory technology and extensive library of data connectors. With the solution and the creation of the group-wide “Big Picture”, the company made IT Transparency a priority at board level during the course of the project.

The customer:

The company is a global player and one of the leading manufacturers and suppliers of sportswear. With its headquarters in Germany and a turnover of several billion euros, it employs people on all continents. As a major outfitter for athletes and sponsor of international sporting events, the company is not only known for innovation, sustainability, and commitment to athletic performance, but also inspires people around the world to lead an active, healthy, and happy life and achieve their athletic goals.

The challenge:

The global sportswear manufacturer was looking to close a critical gap in its IT Visibility: Linux Virtual Server. The company’s SAM team had already been working for many years to identify and gradually eliminate blind spots in the IT landscape. This was done not only to optimize licenses, but also to gain a more comprehensive overview and perform automated analyses of the hardware and software environments.

The company’s various IT teams focused on the specific areas that were relevant to their respective tasks. However, this prevented the sportswear manufacturer from gaining a comprehensive overall picture of its IT infrastructure or generating shared insights that would drive the overall strategy. For example, there was an SCCM team for clients, a server team, a Jamf team and several other teams. This fragmented structure led to data silos that isolated certain areas and limited the visibility of the entire IT environment.

The SAM team was responsible for managing the technical asset and configuration data and therefore had a comprehensive view, the ‘Big Picture’, which other teams relied on daily. However, the SAM team realized that they did not have sufficient data to ensure effective collaboration between the different departments and teams when managing SaaS applications and Linux virtual servers.

The Solution:

As a long-time customer of USU Software Asset Management, the global sportswear brand recognized the critical role of Software Asset Management and IT Asset Management (ITAM) in creating sustainable, secure, and future-proof IT environments. When the need for visibility into SaaS applications and Linux virtual servers arose within the organization, USU recommended Raynet’s Unified Data Platform for Discovery. The long-standing and trusting technology partnership between USU and Raynet is marked by close collaboration. Raynet’s leading discovery inventory and data management solution has played a key role in numerous IT management projects and successes for USU.

The customer primarily used the numerous SaaS connectors and the Discovery & Inventory function of the Unified Data Platform to collect and provide data on business-critical SaaS solutions and all Linux applications. The technology used provides the company with exactly the usage and installation data it needs to optimize its licenses.

„Previously, we were not able to inventory our Linux systems. We knew the devices existed, but there was no data or information about the installed software, which made effective software asset management almost impossible. Thanks to Raynet's zero touch and agentless inventory technology, we have achieved 99% visibility of our devices, including the required data, without impacting the productivity of our running systems.“

The integration of this data into USU’s Software Asset Management solution not only significantly enhanced data quality for the SAM team, but also for all other teams, as reliable reports are generated and shared. By using the Unified Data Platform, the company has eliminated existing gaps in the areas of SaaS and Linux and implemented new protocols and routines to identify incomplete asset records.

The solution and customer benefits:

The global sportswear manufacturer’s Software Asset Management team has long recognized its central initiative as strategic.

The establishment of IT Visibility was initially only a concern of the SAM team. As the project developed, it quickly became obvious that this solution was crucial for the entire organization. Having a complete and consolidated overview of the entire IT landscape not only improved the management of software licenses, but also created a more sustainable and effective IT environment.

In addition, the SAM team achieved something truly unique: by gaining visibility of its technology assets, identifying and reducing data gaps and bringing together different teams and stakeholders, the SAM team was able to create a complete ‘big picture’ not only for its IT Management and governance team, but also for the entire organization.

The solution will enable the sportswear manufacturer to maintain an overview of all its business-critical IT assets in the ever-changing IT world and to keep its environment secure, lean and agile.

Following the successful completion of the IT Visibility project for Linux systems, the customer now plans to inventory the devices in its retail shops using the Unified Data Platform. This will help to maintain comprehensive and consolidated IT Visibility and ensure that Software Asset Management remains an integral part of the long-term business strategy. Raynet will continue to play a significant role in the steps ahead – not only because of the power of its technologies, but also thanks to the company’s strong partnership ethos. The customer praised Raynet for the excellent cooperation during the project and emphasized the readily available technical consultants who solved questions and challenges with commitment and efficiency.
