Service segment internal IT

// Even a number of 30 to 50 workstations are worth packing and distribution

// Results of the new infrastructure are increased efficiency and satisfaction among users

// 1,000 PCs in the company now run with significantly less disturbances than before

As part of the renewal of its software structure, Testo AG introduced a solution that controls and monitors the processes of software packaging and implementation. The IT is intended to support a company. However, it often causes more effort than desired. In order not to interfere with work processes, the constant maintenance of the infrastructure is necessary and decisive. Testo, a specialist in measurement technology, relies on Raynet for the maintenance of the software environment.

The customer
Testo AG is one of the leading companies in measurement technology. With about 2,000 employees worldwide, the specialist offers measurement solutions for, among other things, climate and environmental technology, industrial applications, emission measurements and the monitoring of food quality. Founded in 1957, based in the Black Forest town of Lenzkirch, the company attaches great importance to maintain supporting information technologies in-house. Ralf Birkenmeier, Head of Testo-IT, explains: “IT is regarded as an internal service area in our company. All users on the workstations are seen as customers, who should be provided with the most efficient software environment possible.”

The challenge
As the size of our company increases, the challenge of keeping pace with developments is also growing. The steadily growing administration and support effort at the individual workstations led to the consideration at Testo that the customer satisfaction at the PC workstations had to be increased. Within the company structure, the IT is directly subordinated to the Chairman of the Management Board. Decisions can be quickly made and implemented.

In 2009 the works for realization began at Testo: As part of the renewal of the software structure, the Windows operating system Vista was discussed. For the successful medium-sized company Testo the choice of the right partner was decisive for all future software projects. In Paderborn’s packaging and software management specialist Raynet, the company from Baden-Württemberg found a company on the same level. Raynet Managing Director Ragip Aydin places equally high demands on the quality of its services and products such as Testo on measurement technology.

“With RayFlow, we have first come to know a tool that also monitors the agreed service level agreements and issues corresponding messages.”

The solution and customer benefits
In client management, a lot has happened since the start of the cooperation, which went into implementation two years after the initial contact. Either introduced or refreshed at Testo AG were the Symatec Solutions Deployment Solution in version 6.9, the Client Management Suite (CMS) in version 7.0 and WisePackage studio as packaging system. Controlled and monitored during packaging and implementing the processes by Raynet’s tool “RayFlow”. With this self-developed tool, the IT service provider controls and monitors the packaging and virtualization of several thousand software packages per year. The tool manages and controls all packaging orders, beginning with the approval and evaluation, through the packaging itself following up until testing, the inspection and the rollout into productive operation.

The current status of the processes is passed on to the responsible persons in an integrated reporting system. IT boss Birkenmeier says: “With RayFlow, we have first come to know a tool that also monitors the agreed service level agreements and issues corresponding messages.”

Organizational measures of a migration project, such as the migration to department or company areas, can also be supported with the tool so that only certain operating parts would be affected by possible conversion problems.

Own packaging guidelines for Testo and a method for operating system distribution take account of customer requirements. Even a number of 30 to 50 workstations are worth packing and distribution. The results of the entire new infrastructure are not just the result of increased efficiency and satisfaction among users: “Previously, the work of internal IT was often characterized by frustrating systematic troubles. It took far too long for new applications or application changes in product operation. This has shifted thoroughly towards the prospective administrations of a new system, which works with more reliability and higher performance,” says the IT chief of Testo AG. The almost 1,000 PCs in the company now run with significantly less disturbances than before. To use RayFlow and peripheral systems, only a few hours of target training were required. Currently, Raynet and Testo are working on preparation for a total migration of the IT infrastructure to Windows 7.

Testo manufactures portable and stationary measuring systems, including heating, climate and environmental technology, industrial applications, emission measurement and quality control.
