Thanks to Raynet technologies, a drink manufacturer revolutionizes Inventory and Patch Management

60% time savings
Implementing Raynet One UEM lead to considerable time savings in IT management, especially in patch management and inventorying.

Fully automated Patch Management to complement Microsoft Intune

Raynet ‘s Inventory & Patch Management enabled improved transparency and automated patch processes, making the environment securer than it had ever been.

Professional Partnership

The partnership with Raynet was extremely professional. The customer benefitted not just from the solution but also from continuous support and development.

A global acting drink manufacturer was on the lookout for a comprehensive solution to manage their IT infrastructure, especially for Windows and Mac devices. The energy drink manufacturer wanted to move from device-centric to user-centric endpoint management and to pursue a cloud-first strategy. After an intensive search, the project stakeholders chose Raynet One UEM (Formerly RayManageSoft Unified Endpoint Manager (UEM)). With this solution, they were able to inventory their IT assets, automate patch management, achieve better transparency, and automate more of their processes. The result: time savings and a more secure IT environment.

The Challenge

For years, the customer had used a reliable client management system and matured it to an advanced degree, so that it could handle the energy drink manufacturer’s vast and complex IT infrastructure.

But when the stakeholders decided to move from device-centric to a user-centric endpoint management, they discovered they had troubles with the stability of their agents. Agents were no longer responding, making it difficult to get a complete overview of the hardware and software in their environment as well as performing regular update, patch, and security management on those end devices.

And although they onboarded Microsoft Intune just two years before, they faced functionality gaps for inventory and patch management. Consequently, both systems had to be run in parallel – in the cloud and on locally hosted servers. But the customer had a cloud-first strategy. These solutions couldn’t support that strategy because they needed to be hosted on local servers.

So the energy drink manufacturer went looking for a comprehensive inventory and patch management solution for its Windows and Mac worlds. The solution should allow the organization to move its endpoint management into the cloud, focus on hybrid working, and shift from managing devices to managing users.

In a world of hybrid work, Bring Your Own Devices, and cloud-first strategies, focusing on users instead of devices is a crucial and necessary shift in direction.

After collecting requirements from the Digital Security and License Management teams, the customer decided on the following criteria for the Request for Proposal (RFP) for the new solution:

  • Complete inventory of Windows and Mac devices
  • Automated patch management for Windows and Mac
  • Integrated interfaces to ITSM and SAM tools
  • Comprehensive and centralized reporting on all IT assets

The Solution

During the RFP process, the customer considered solutions from other software vendors in addition to the standard Gartner Magic Quadrant vendors and, after an intensive evaluation process, selected Raynet One UEM.

Raynet offered the customer the opportunity to work closely with the company as it continued to develop the solution. The drink manufacturer also recognized Raynet’s potential for joint and future development of the solution. The customer´s gut feeling was confirmed on numerous occasions, including workshops at Raynet’s headquarters in Paderborn, Germany.

“When we reported on a major challenge in a joint workshop that was fundamental to our project, it looked at first as if there was no solution. Those involved in the workshop did not discuss it with us. I even briefly had the feeling that the Raynet development team wasn’t listening to me because they were so engrossed in their laptops,” the Global Workplace Services and Workplace Application Manager of the project, reports with a smile. “Instead, even as I was describing the problem, Raynet colleagues had worked out a solution – there’s probably no better description for customer-centric development.”

By working closely together, the customer can test new features and collaborate on improvements and changes that benefit not only them, but the solution and all its users.

– Raynet makes the impossible possible, developing visionary yet customer-focused solutions for both current and future market needs. –

The Benefits

The customer deployed Raynet One UEM within weeks and was simultaneously surprised and delighted by the immediate benefits the solution provided. The energy drink maker had hoped to use the new agent to improve the quality of its IT inventory – and it did. Maybe even a little too much. Early in the rollout, the new Raynet One UEM for macOS agent delivered significantly more data than the team was used to, causing the license management solution to briefly break down, overwhelming the solution provider’s consultant.

But few IT asset managers have ever complained about having too much data. In that moment, Raynet proved one of its most important value claims: It gets all the data. Really, all the data.

A UEM solution, like a reliable back-end system, should run so well that no one even notices it’s there. With Raynet One UEM, the drink manufacturer can define and execute patch management processes almost entirely without user interruption. Employees work without interruption while their systems are updates. And everyone is happy to get the software they need, without any restrictions to how they work, whether on their Windows, Mac, or mobile devices.

Raynet One UEM offers even more than that. Its efficient end-to-end processes have enabled the customer to automate endpoint management to the highest degree while providing visibility across the IT landscape. Raynet One UEM provided the customer with additional added benefits:

  • Automated Security Patch Management: As soon as vulnerability information enters the system, Raynet One UEM automatically patches all affected devices and systems within just one hour.
  • Automated License Assignments: With the user-centric system, the customer has implemented processes to automatically assign software licenses based on user definitions such as role, project, device, etc.
  • Comprehensive and centralized reporting on device assignment: The customer can now quickly and easily determine to whom a device is assigned.
  • License abuse detection: The automated features and improved visibility enable the customer to improve license compliance by ensuring licenses are assigned to the right users and automatically correlating users with devices.
  • Software Deployment Reporting: This allows IT to see which users have logged into which asset.

With the new solution, the customer has closed its visibility gaps, automated more processes, increased efficiency, and saved time. When asked how much time is saved with the new solution, the Services Owner at the drink manufacturer, admitted that they have never been able to create a patch process on this scale before: “If we just focus on the steps that our patch management process used to take, we have achieved time savings of 60% with Raynet. But we’re pursuing a goal that is probably unique, and we maintain active contact with cybersecurity experts around the world to ensure we’re on the right track and to keep us thinking outside the box. ” A gap that had previously been acknowledged and accepted is now being closed.

The Upshot

The customer has not only improved its endpoint management, security patch management, and license management processes with Raynet One UEM, but is now expanding the project to create a unique, fully automated, end-to-end data-driven vulnerability management system.

“When we take the project online, we will be able to show which applications have vulnerabilities and patch them automatically in the future. We will have a very secure environment. And more secure than it has ever been before,” says the leader of this project.

With the explosion of ransomware attacks and cybersecurity breaches in recent years, IT security is driving IT and business initiatives across all major industries around the world. The customer believes in positioning itself as a leader in cybersecurity and is using Raynet One UEM and Raynet to do just that.

In the coming months, the customer will use Raynet One UEM and Raynet’s expertise to unify vulnerability management for clients and servers – a process that is currently separate for the two. Data will be integrated into the CMDB and then fed into ServiceNow’s vulnerability management system. This is made possible by myriad connectors and Raynet’s flexible platform.

By the time the customer completes the project, the energy drink maker will have built a state-of-the-art vulnerability management system that includes rules for automatically identifying vulnerabilities, classifying and prioritizing them, and grouping vulnerabilities by remediation action. According to the company’s own statements, such a mature concept exists only once in the entire world.

This includes, for example, whether the system that needs to be patched is business-critical and requires additional permissions, helping to avoid interruptions and providing transparency about what has and has not been patched.

“With Raynet One UEM, we have never been more secure. The complete visibility and automation have greatly improved our response time and eliminated black holes in our IT assets. Working with Raynet has been one of the most professional experiences we have ever had. We get to the heart of the matter in every meeting, and we know that Raynet sees us as a true partner, not only evolving our endpoint management, patching and security processes, but also enhancing and improving the solution.”
