In the course of a Microsoft license survey at the University of Zurich, Raynet was called in by its partner Insight to determine and provide complete transparency of all hardware and software of the entire decentralized client and server infrastructure.

The Customer

The University of Zurich is one of the best research universities in Europe. With approx. 10,000 employees and more than 27,000 students, it is Switzerland‘s largest university and offers a wide range of academic subjects.

The Challenge

Due to a Microsoft license survey, the University of Zurich was faced with the challenge of setting up a complete client and server inventory within a given period in order to achieve complete compliance.

The infrastructure of the geographically spread faculties consists of decentralized networks in which the client and server systems are operated. In addition, the university has stand-alone devices that are self-sufficient and not connected to the network.

The Solution

Raynet‘s inventory solution Raynet One(formerly: RayVentory) is optimal for centralized and decentralized scanning and capturing of all IT landscapes and thus mastered all challenges to the fullest satisfaction.

After the creation of the rollout concept for the University of Zurich, Raynet One was first deployed to the various faculties by the IT managers of the educational institute via their own intranet in the decentralized networks. After a brief introduction, the IT staff at the respective university locations scanned the networks independently.

In order to discover all devices, Windows as well as non-Windows, different scanning methods have been used: With the Zero Touch option, a comprehensive software scan has already been performed without the need to install an agent on the target systems. The discovery of the end devices was initiated from central as well as decentral points to inventory all devices that were present in the network at that time.

Technology

"Throughout the entire project we could rely on Raynet and their many years of experience. Together, we reached our goal in the shortest possible time and achieved high-quality results."

In order to also capture the devices that are not permanantly connected to the network, further scans were planned in advance and triggered automatically at various times with the help of agent-based inventory.

In addition, some networks are located in an isolated environment and are not accessible from the outside. Since Raynet One is portable, the solution can be conveniently executed via a USB stick on the relevant target devices. The decentral determined data is stored on it and afterwards uploaded to the central server.

Raynet One performs a variety of tasks automatically, making it very intuitive for IT managers. In order to make the customer even more familiar with the inventory solution, a training-on-the-job was carried out parallel to the project.

Based on the inventoried data of all end devices, a compliance balance was then drawn up using Aspera‘s SmartTrack solution.

Customer benefits

During the entire project phase, both Raynet and the customer benefi ted from the continuous exchange. The feedback led to the development of new functions, based on the customer-specific requirements, and to their integration into the product.

The complete inventory of all end devices led to a complete license transparency. This enabled savings on licenses and at the same time prevented over- and underlicensing.

Conclusion

“Throughout the entire project we could rely on Raynet and their many years of experience. Together, we reached our goal in the shortest possible time and achieved high-quality results,” says the project manager of the University of Zurich.
